Breakdown
Double Slants out of I Form Slot Flex 21 personnel sends both outside receivers on quick slant routes across the middle while the slot receiver on the strong side runs a short out breaking to the flat. The two slants stack from opposite sides of the formation, crossing at similar depth to create natural traffic against man coverage and to sit down in the void between underneath zone defenders. This is a man beater built for a quick timing throw, with the primary read starting on the near-side slant and progressing to the backside slant if the first window is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners in press or off man, this play thrives against man due to the natural rub created by the two slants crossing. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers sitting in the slant windows signal zone coverage and will jump the throwing lanes. Post-snap, key the slot corner's first two steps, if he sinks into a zone drop the flat route becomes the better option over the slant. Look for a user lurk defender spying the middle of the field, this play is vulnerable to a rat in the hole sitting in the crossing lanes of both slants. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined underneath zone defenders can clog both slant windows, forcing you to check down to the flat route quickly.
Usage Tips
Get this play out fast on a three step drop, the slants are designed to be thrown in rhythm before the pocket collapses.
Use it on early downs or short to medium yardage situations where a quick five to eight yard gain keeps you ahead of the sticks.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot corner, if he is playing outside leverage the flat route from the slot receiver will be open immediately as a hot read.
Against man coverage, throw the slant to the side with the most cushion, the crossing traffic from the two slants will pick off trailing defenders in man.
Pair this play with 94 Will or 95 Mike in your call sheet to keep linebackers guessing between run and quick pass, then dial up PA Dagger once you have their underneath defenders biting on the slants.
