Breakdown

PA Dagger from Slot Flex I Form runs a play-action fake to sell the run, then attacks the middle and boundary of the field with a vertical route stack. Off the play fake, one receiver clears out deep on a vertical seam while the underneath route sits down in the middle of the field, creating the classic Dagger high-low stretch on any linebacker or safety dropping into that zone. On the opposite side, the X receiver runs a deep out breaking toward the sideline, giving a horizontal stretch element against Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. The primary read is the deep seam clearing out coverage first, then working down to the sit route in the middle of the field if the underneath defender bites on the play-action or the deep route is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: two high safeties usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which the deep out and seam combo are designed to exploit. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which signals Cover 3 and puts extra pressure on the flat and hook zone defenders to cover the sit route. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, since a slow reaction to the play-action fake opens the seam route for an explosive gain. User-controlled safeties who sit deep in the middle of the field can jump the seam route, so be ready to check down to the sit route or the out route if you see the deep defender staying home. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten badly by the vertical seam, so use pre-snap motion or audibles to confirm man versus zone before committing to the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake by holding the run animation as long as possible before hitting the seam route to freeze linebackers and safeties. Look for two deep safeties pre-snap to confirm Cover 2, since the deep out route and the seam clear-out create natural conflict for the corner and safety on that side. Hot route the underneath sit route to a deeper crossing route against Cover 3 if the flat defender is sitting shallow and taking away easy completions. Use this play on early downs in run-heavy personnel to keep the defense honest, then follow it up with Double Slants or HB Dive Alert Smoke once the defense starts overplaying the pass. Pair PA Dagger with 94 Will or 95 Mike in your play-calling sequence so linebackers cannot sit on the underneath route without opening up the blitz picture for a quick throw.
