Breakdown
HB Dive Alert Smoke out of the I Form Slot Flex set is a run-pass alert that gives you an outside bail-out against overloaded fronts. The base play is a downhill HB Dive with the FB, TE, and entire offensive line firing off the ball to seal interior gaps, while WR1 runs a Bubble Screen to the flat and WR2 stays in to pass protect. This gives you a built-in horizontal answer to blitzes and edge overloads without changing personnel, functioning as a run play with a screen alert rather than a true dropback pass concept.
Defensive Reads
Read the slot corner and outside linebacker leverage before the snap since a hard edge blitz or overloaded nickel front is your trigger to throw the alert Smoke. Watch for a defender walked into the box late, which signals the defense is selling out on the run and opening up the bubble. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl-flat zone player since a fast squeeze to the flat can undercut the Bubble Screen before the receiver's blocker can engage. Base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with linebackers sitting at normal depth are vulnerable to the Dive hitting the A or B gap before flow arrives. Man coverage teams that blitz off the edge get exposed because the alert receiver is uncovered before the ball is even snapped.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front before the snap and alert to the Bubble Screen anytime you see extra defenders stacked inside the box or a hard edge blitz coming off the slot corner. Use the Dive as your base call on early downs against base fronts to keep linebackers honest and set up play-action shots later in the drive. If the defense shows blitz or walks a nickel corner down into the box pre-snap, throw the alert immediately since the numbers advantage on the perimeter is already built in. Pair this with PA FB Flat or PA Dagger later in the series once you have shown the Dive enough to bait linebackers into cheating downhill. Avoid throwing the Smoke into press coverage with outside leverage since the corner has a clean angle to blow it up before the blocker can get set.
