Overview

Flexbone Normal is the base alignment of Madden's flexbone package, running 30 personnel: three backs behind the quarterback with two split ends outside. The fullback sets directly behind the QB and two wingbacks align just outside the tackle box, giving you a true triple option backfield. Unlike the more spread out or motion heavy sets in the formation, Normal keeps everything condensed and symmetrical, which means the defense has to declare its front and its safety rotation before you ever motion or hot route. With Gadget tags attached, this is a change of pace look that most online opponents have almost no practice defending.

The play list is built around veer and midline concepts: Midline Triple, Inside Veer Triple Opt, Load Option, Midline Read Iso, FB Dive, and Wb Dive give you a full option tree from one alignment. The read mechanics matter here because you are attacking the unblocked defender rather than trying to win with pure blocking. If a user takes the dive, you keep and get the pitch phase to a wingback with a numbers advantage on the perimeter. If the user crashes down on the QB, the dive hits clean up the gut. Against zone heavy users who sit in Cover 3 or Cover 4 with high safeties, the run game is essentially free yardage on early downs.

The passing menu is short but purposeful. Fk FB Toss Boot Rt sells the toss and gets the QB moving outside the pocket with a leak concept behind it. PA FB Dive and PA HB Dive punish linebackers who start flying up into the box after you gash them a few times. Flood gives you a three level stretch to one side, and X Dig isolates the split end on a deep in cut against man coverage with no help underneath because the wingbacks occupy the linebackers. The personnel is the matchup advantage: defenses that check to heavy run fronts leave a single high safety accounting for two split ends who are running routes with a two way go.

Strengths

  • Full triple option tree from one alignment means Midline Triple, Inside Veer Triple Opt, and Load Option all look identical pre-snap, so users cannot pre-commit a defender without guessing.
  • X Dig isolates the split end against man coverage with zero underride help, and the wingbacks hold the linebackers in the box long enough for the in cut to clear.
  • Play action off the option series (PA FB Dive, PA HB Dive) freezes user-controlled linebackers who have been sitting in the run fit, opening the intermediate middle.
  • Flood delivers a clean three level stretch (deep, intermediate, shallow) that beats Cover 3 buzz and any single high zone rotation.
  • Fk FB Toss Boot Rt moves the QB off the spot to defeat nano blitz pressure and interior A gap heat that would otherwise blow up a static dropback.

Weaknesses

  • Condensed alignment invites heavy run fronts, and users who bring outside pressure from both edges can crash the pitch phase before your wingback gets numbers.
  • Only two split ends means you have almost no route diversity, so once an opponent sees X Dig and Flood they can rotate coverage to the split end side and take away your entire passing menu.
  • Option handoffs are slow developing in Madden, and a user-controlled defensive end who sits still instead of committing can play both the dive and the QB keep.
  • Pass protection is a real problem on any true dropback because backs have to release into option assignments, leaving five blockers against six man pressure looks.
  • Third and long is nearly unplayable from this set, so opponents can sit in soft zone and dare you to throw from a run heavy alignment.

Usage Tips

Use this on first and second down when the defense shows a two high shell or any zone look with the safeties deep, and hammer Midline Triple or Inside Veer Triple Opt until they commit a defender to the QB.

Read the unblocked end pre-snap: if he is aligned wide and upfield, run Midline Read Iso or FB Dive inside him. If he is squeezing down over the tackle, get to the pitch phase.

Once a user starts biting on the dive, dial PA FB Dive or PA HB Dive and look for the split end or the leaking wingback behind the second level.

Hot route a wingback to a corner or flat against Cover 3 to attack the void the deep third leaves outside the numbers, then pair it with Flood for a two play sequence to the same side.

Save Fk FB Toss Boot Rt for a blitz down where you have already established the toss, and check your protection pre-snap because the QB is on the move without help outside.
