Overview

Flexbone Close tightens the split of both wingbacks so they align just outside the tackles instead of stretched toward the numbers, which is the core difference between this set and the wider Flexbone looks. You are running 30 personnel with a fullback directly behind the quarterback and two wingbacks flanking the formation, leaving a single split end to hold the boundary. That compression turns every option play into a downhill read with the pitch man arriving faster, and it forces the defense to fit six or seven gaps inside the tackle box before it can worry about anything on the perimeter.

The play list is built around the triple option family: Load Option, Inside Veer Triple Opt, and Midline Triple give you three distinct ways to read the same defensive front. Midline Triple attacks the first defender inside, Inside Veer Triple Opt reads the end man on the line of scrimmage, and Load Option kicks that defender out to hand you a clean pitch lane. FB Zone Dive and Wb Dive are your quick hitters when the AI defensive line starts crashing wide, and both go for chunk yards against nickel or dollar personnel that cannot match the extra blocker.

Where Close really earns its Gadget tag is the play-action package. PA FB Dive and PA Wb Post sell the same mesh of bodies the defense has been chasing all series, then release the wingback down the seam against a safety who has already committed his eyes to the box. Flood is the true zone beater, layering three levels to one side and isolating the split end on an island against whatever corner is left in single coverage with no help over the top. Because defenses almost always answer Flexbone with heavy personnel and base coverage, that isolated receiver is often facing a linebacker or a backed off corner with no press support.

Strengths

  • Three separate option reads (Midline Triple, Inside Veer Triple Opt, Load Option) let you attack a different defender each snap without changing formation, which stalls any user trying to sit on one gap.
  • Flood is a clean zone beater out of a run heavy look, flooding one side with three levels and pulling the flat defender out of position while the deep route works behind him.
  • PA Wb Post punishes safeties who trigger downhill, and the compressed alignment means the wingback releases behind the linebackers before a Cover 3 free safety can gain depth.
  • Compressed splits create natural leverage for cut blocks and kick out blocks, so the pitch man usually has a numbers advantage on the edge against sub personnel.
  • Motioning a wingback across the formation pre-snap reveals man or zone instantly and lets you flip the strength of the option before the snap.

Weaknesses

  • Only one true wide receiver means quick pass concepts are nearly nonexistent, and if the defense sells out with a nano blitz you have no five wide checkdown structure to punish it.
  • Interior heat kills every option play in the set because the quarterback mesh point sits deep behind the fullback, so a user controlled defensive tackle in the A gap ends the play before the read happens.
  • Coverage users can bracket the split end without consequence since the wingbacks release late, turning Flood and PA Wb Post into contested throws.
  • Goal line and short yardage defenses with eight in the box remove the dive game entirely, and Wb Dive plus FB Zone Dive stop gaining leverage once the edges are set.
  • Heavy tendencies here are easy to scout in a series, and opponents who recognize Flexbone Close will pre-set their front and user the pitch defender every snap.

Usage Tips

Read the alignment of the end man on the line of scrimmage before you snap: if he is widened, run Midline Triple, and if he is crowding the tackle, go Inside Veer Triple Opt or Load Option to kick him out.

Use FB Zone Dive on second and short to bait the safeties down, then come right back with PA Wb Post on the next series when they cheat their run fits.

Hot route the split end to a fade or slot streak against single high looks so you always have a vertical shot if the option read collapses.

Motion one wingback and watch whether a linebacker mirrors him, then run the option away from the defender who followed to leave the defense a man short at the point of attack.

Save Flood for third down in the four to eight yard range, and read the flat defender first: if he sinks, dump it to the underneath route rather than forcing the deep option.
