FB Zone Dive is a downhill run play out of the Flexbone Close formation with 30 personnel, designed to hit fast between the tackles behind a zone blocking scheme. The fullback takes the direct handoff and reads the play side guard and center combo blocks, pressing the mesh point before cutting into whichever gap the linebacker flow vacates. This is a run play built to attack light boxes and gap integrity, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and it pairs with the flexbone's option looks to keep second level defenders honest.
Watch the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow and square he is reading run and will fill the dive lane quickly. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with two safeties deep, since one high safety rotation often means an extra run defender has crept into the box. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and guard combo, a two gap or shaded technique tackle can blow this play up before the fullback reaches the line. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill immediately after the snap, which signals the defense is selling out on stopping the dive and opening up perimeter option plays like Load Option. Any defense running a 46 heavy front or overload blitz to the play side gap will shut this down, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz personnel.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a negative play against stacked fronts.
Use the fullback's natural quickness to hit the crease fast rather than dancing, since zone dive lives on one cut and go decisiveness.
Pair this with Inside Veer Triple Opt and Midline Triple in the same series so linebackers have to respect the dive read every snap, which slows their flow to the perimeter option plays.
Call this on early downs or short yardage (2nd or 3rd and 2 or less) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of stacking extra DBs.
If the defense shows a heavy box pre-snap, motion or audible into PA FB Dive or Wb Dive from the same set to keep the defense guessing without changing personnel.
