Wb Dive is a downhill run play out of the Flexbone Normal set that hands the ball to the wingback on a quick interior dive. The offensive line fires off the ball with double teams at the point of attack and combo blocks up to the second level, while the fullback and quarterback fake action to hold the linebackers and force flow. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the frontside gap: the wingback presses the hole and reads the first down lineman or linebacker to decide whether to cut inside or bounce off the double team.
Watch for a 4-3 or 4-4 front with linebackers sitting shallow, this alignment is vulnerable to the quick hit of Wb Dive before flow can react. If the defense shows a heavy box with both safeties crashed down pre-snap, this play will struggle since there is no extra gap for the wingback to escape to. Post-snap, track whether the playside defensive tackle is getting doubled or if a user-controlled defender is shooting the gap early, a fast diagnosing defender can blow this play up before the double team sets. Look for linebackers flowing hard to the fullback fake, if they bite on the mesh point the wingback has a clean lane to the second level. Against defenses that consistently crash the edge to stop option plays in this set, Wb Dive becomes more effective since the interior defenders are often occupied by the double team and cannot help outside.
Use Wb Dive on early downs when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run out of Flexbone's unbalanced look.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if both linebackers are stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead of forcing this play into a loaded box.
Pair Wb Dive with FB Dive and Midline Triple Opt in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on which back is getting the ball, this keeps second and third level defenders honest.
Hot route the fullback to a lead block if you see the defense stacking the box with an extra defender, this gives your wingback an extra blocker at the second level.
Run this on second and short or third and short when you need a high-percentage gain and want to keep the defense guessing between dive and option looks from the same formation.
