Cover 3 out of the Bear Under 46 formation is a three deep, four under zone shell built off a Base 4-3 front. The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks bailing into deep thirds while the two safeties rotate to the deep middle and hold their landmark, giving you a true three deep zone look. Underneath, the linebackers and slot defenders sink into curl to flat and hook zones, with the two inside defenders working short crossing drops to wall off in cut and drag routes while the flat defenders (purple routes) sink toward the sideline to take away quick outs and swing routes. This is a zone based coverage designed to defend the whole field against both run and pass, with the read progression starting deep (identify the vertical threat entering your third) before working down to the underneath crossers and flats.
Defensive Reads
Key the two deep corners at the snap, if they open their hips and run vertically with a receiver you are in a healthy zone drop and should widen to protect the sideline. Watch the underneath linebackers' initial drop angle, if they sink too fast into hook zones they leave the flat wide open for quick game and hot route conversions. This shell struggles against high low stretches on the flat defender, so watch for offenses attacking the purple zone landmarks with combination routes that put two receivers on one underneath defender. Post-snap, track any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle, since a smart user will jump inside breaking routes before the quarterback can capitalize on the seam. Cover 3 out of Bear Under holds up well against inside runs due to the stacked front, but it is exposed to quick perimeter run plays if the flat defenders are late reading run flow instead of staying square.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to check if the defense is playing true zone or disguising man, since Cover 3 out of Bear Under is vulnerable to any offense that flashes motion across the formation without a defender following.
This call is best on early downs or obvious run situations because the Bear Under front sells physical run support while still giving you three deep defenders to prevent the big play over the top.
Bracket the deep middle by keying the free safety, if he widens late to help a corner you can attack the vacated deep middle third with a deep post or seam route before the throw window closes.
Pair this Cover 3 call with Cover 1 and Cover 2 Man from the same Bear Under set so the pre-snap look stays identical, forcing the quarterback to guess between man and zone based purely on formation.
Sequence this with LB Dogs or LB Dogs 3 on the next snap to keep offenses honest, since both calls share the same alignment but one drops into zone while the others bring extra pressure.
