Engage Eight out of Bear Under is a run stop defensive play built to load the box and clog every gap at the snap. All three deep defenders drop straight down into their landmarks with no help over the top, while the entire second and third level (both linebackers, both safeties coming down, and the corners) fire downhill immediately as shown by the red arrows converging toward the line of scrimmage. This is a pure run commit call with no coverage disguise, designed to win with numbers at the point of attack rather than reading routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for a fullback or extra tight end and heavy run personnel since this play is built to be exploited by pass concepts. Watch the offensive line splits and depth of the running back, tight splits and a run heavy stance usually confirm you called the right defense. Post-snap, key the first pulling lineman or down block to identify the run gap and fit accordingly with your linebackers. This play gets shredded by any quick pass, screen, or play-action rollout because every underneath defender is triggering forward with no eyes on the quarterback. If the offense audibles to a spread formation or shows shotgun with receivers spread wide, get off this call immediately since the deep thirds have zero help and speed option or RPO looks will punish the aggressive flow.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when you have pre-snap read confirming a run heavy personnel grouping or a team that leans on inside zone and gap schemes. Use your Mike linebacker's alignment to shade the strength of a strong formation before the snap to fill the correct gap first. Pair this with Cover 3 or Cover 1 from the same Bear Under set so offenses cannot key run versus pass off your pre-snap picture. Avoid calling this against spread sets or obvious passing situations since the aggressive downhill flow leaves the deep thirds and underneath zones extremely thin. Sequence this after showing LB Dogs or LB Dogs 3 earlier in the drive so the offense respects both the run fit and the blitz look from the same look.
