Gap Press is a run stop blitz look out of Bear Under in the 46 formation, built to attack downhill against inside run concepts. Up front all five interior defenders crash hard into their gaps with penetrating angles, spilling the ball outward while the two deep defenders stay home to protect against a cutback or play-action shot. This is not a coverage beater in the traditional sense, it is a gap control run stopper with the linebackers and defensive line flowing to fill run lanes on contact, and the primary read is simply diagnosing run versus pass presnap since the whole front is committed to gap integrity the instant the ball is snapped.
Presnap, check the offensive personnel and formation width, if the offense is stacked with extra blockers or tight formations this play shuts down inside run concepts almost immediately. Watch the running back depth and alignment, if he is aligned tight to the line in an I-form or heavy set that confirms an inside run is likely coming and Gap Press is the correct call. Post-snap, key the offensive line's first steps, if they fire out low and combo block at the point of attack you are reading run and your gap shooters should already be working through their assigned gaps. This play is vulnerable to play-action and RPO looks since linebackers are flowing hard downhill, if the quarterback shows a pass fake off run action be ready to see explosive plays over the middle since the deep defenders are the only coverage left. Against outside zone or stretch runs, this play can be exposed if ball carriers bounce it outside faster than the edge defenders can react, so user the outside contain defender if you sense a stretch play developing.
Call Gap Press on short yardage and goal line situations where you expect a between the tackles run, since every interior gap gets immediate penetration.
Use it on early downs like first and second and ten to punish offenses that lean on inside zone, dive, or gap scheme runs out of heavier personnel.
Pair it with Cover 1 or Cover 2 Man from this same Bear Under set so the offense cannot key run versus pass off your presnap alignment.
If the offense shows shotgun spread with three or more receivers, check to LB Dogs or Cover 3 instead since Gap Press leaves light coverage behind the penetrating front.
Avoid calling this on clear passing downs, the aggressive gap shooting up front creates natural rush lanes but also opens quick game throws underneath if the offense identifies the run blitz look.
