This is a defensive coverage play designed to take away deep shots by trapping receivers between the man defenders underneath and the two deep safeties, making it a strong zone beater against vertical routes but vulnerable to natural picks and rub routes that create separation from man defenders.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment pre snap to confirm both safeties are showing two high, which telegraphs this coverage to attentive offenses, so disguise it when possible by holding the safeties at depth until the snap. Key the receiver stems immediately after the snap, man defenders should mirror hip to hip and look to flip their eyes to the quarterback only once the receiver breaks to avoid getting beat on double moves. Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the deep safeties and the underneath man defenders, since crossing routes and deep digs are the primary man beater concepts that exploit the space before the safety can rotate over. Identify trips or bunch formations before the snap because natural picks are the main counter to this call, and consider manually bumping a linebacker or nickel defender to shadow the inside receiver through the release. Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to test the deep middle or take a shot down the sideline, since the two deep safeties take away the top of the field. Pre snap, identify if the offense is stacking or bunching receivers, because natural picks against man coverage are the biggest threat to this call and you may need to shade a defender or press the slot to disrupt the release. Use the flat foot press or user the underneath man defender on the most dangerous route runner to jump short crossers and option routes that man corners struggle with in isolation. Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud in your call sheet so offenses cannot key on your safety rotation, then mix in Tampa 2 on early downs to disguise the deep half responsibility with a similar pre snap look. Avoid calling this against heavy motion offenses that create natural rubs unless you plan to manually adjust your linebacker depth or switch a defender to bracket the slot receiver.
