Cover 3 Sky is a three deep, four under zone shell out of the 4-3 Odd front. The diagram shows both outside cornerback X's dropping vertically into deep thirds while the deep middle defender bails straight back, giving you three deep defenders splitting the field evenly. Underneath, the SS (purple) flows out to the flat/curl area, the two inside linebackers (tan) work curl-to-flat and hook zones with short crossing angles, and the WILL (purple square) spills out to the opposite flat, creating a true four man underneath cushion beneath the deep thirds. This is a zone beater against man heavy route concepts and it holds up well versus quick game, but your primary read progression starts with the deep middle third defender to rule out any post shot, then works down to the curl/flat combination on the strength side where the flat defender (Sky safety) is triggering run support or shallow crossers.
Pre-snap, identify the Sky safety alignment tight to the box, since that tells the offense run support is coming from depth on that side and away go-routes into the deep third can be exploited if your cornerback bites on double moves. Post-snap, key the two inside linebackers dropping into hook/curl zones, since their depth and spacing determine whether the offense can sit a receiver in the soft spot between the underneath zone and the deep thirds. This coverage is vulnerable to seam routes attacking the void between the hook defenders and the deep middle third defender, so watch for user-controlled slot receivers sitting in that window. It shuts down quick outs and flat routes because of the extra flat defender, but if the offense runs four verticals it can stress the deep middle third defender, so be ready to lurk with a deep defender if you see stacked releases. Watch the WILL linebacker's flat drop timing against RPO tags, since a late trigger there opens up bubble screens and flare routes to the running back.
Use this on early downs when you expect run or short play action, since the Sky safety in the flat gives you extra run support to the strength side without sacrificing deep coverage. Pre-snap, check if the offense is stacking receivers to one side, since the four under zone can get stressed by heavy stacking that overloads one flat defender. If you see trips or bunch formations, hot route the WILL linebacker further outside to widen his flat drop and prevent easy pitch and catch throws in the boundary. Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on which underneath defender has run force, keeping the strength side guessing between Sky and Cloud rotations. On third and medium, mix this in after running Cover 1 Robber Press to bait the quarterback into thinking man coverage is coming, then drop into the Sky shell to sit on curl and flat throws.
