Mike Blitz 0 is a Cover 0 zero blitz out of the Penny 3-3-5 Big Nickel 5-1-5 look, sending five defenders on the attack while leaving zero deep safety help behind man coverage. The diagram shows all five underneath defenders (three linebackers and two off-ball defenders) firing downhill immediately at the snap, with the Mike blitzing straight up the middle off the top of the diagram to attack the pocket. This is a pure man beater blitz designed to win with pressure before the quarterback can climb the pocket, and the primary read progression for the defense is simple: get after the quarterback first, then trust the man defenders on the perimeter to hold up on any quick game or hot routes.
Pre snap, identify if the offense has a running back or tight end staying in to chip block, since that extra blocker can pick up your extra rusher and neutralize the blitz. Look at the safety alignment and depth: if both safeties are up near the box or removed from the middle of the field, that confirms the Cover 0 shell and you should expect man matchups on the outside. Post snap, key the quarterback's eyes immediately off the snap since with no deep help, any receiver who wins his release against man coverage is a touchdown threat. This blitz shuts down teams that need extra time to develop deep drops or double moves, but it gets exposed by quick game concepts, hot routes, and screens that attack the vacated underneath areas. Watch for a lurking user defender dropping late to disguise the all out blitz look, since some Mike Blitz 0 variations bait the quarterback into thinking it is a standard blitz before the fifth rusher arrives late.
Call this on third and long or in two minute drill situations where the offense is likely to take a deep drop, since there is no safety help over the top to bail you out against a shot play. Check the offensive formation pre snap for stacked or bunch receivers, since man coverage with no safety help is vulnerable to natural rub routes and pick concepts. Use pre-snap motion adjustments or a spy audible on the Mike if you suspect a mobile quarterback who can escape the initial rush lanes. Pair this with Sam Mike 3 Press earlier in a series to condition the offense into expecting man press, then dial up Mike Blitz 0 to bring extra heat once they settle into hot route habits. Only call this against offenses without quick game timing routes ready, because if the quarterback recognizes zero pre snap he can get the ball out in under two seconds and make you pay in man coverage.
