HB Lead out of the Wishbone Tight formation is a power run play built around a fullback iso block leading the halfback through the hole. The FB attacks the second level to isolate and remove a linebacker while the offensive line executes down blocks and combo blocks to seal the point of attack, giving the runner a clean crease between the tackles. This is a straightforward gap scheme run, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression is the fullback's block: key which linebacker he engages, then decide whether to hit the direct hole or bounce outside off his hip based on how the defender reacts.
Watch the middle linebacker's depth pre-snap, if he is sitting at five yards or deeper he can read and react to the fullback's block, which kills the play's effectiveness. Look for safety rotation into the box before the snap, an eight-man front with both safeties creeping down is a strong sign the defense expects run and will outnumber the blocking scheme. Post-snap, key whether the defense sends a user-controlled linebacker to shoot the gap untouched before the FB can square up his block, that nano blitz timing will blow up HB Lead immediately. Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with slow-flowing linebackers are the most exploitable, since the fullback can climb to the second level cleanly and create a lane. Stacked fronts with a plugged nose tackle and disciplined edge defenders holding their gaps shut this run down, forcing you to bounce it outside where numbers usually favor the defense.
Run this against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where the defense stacks the box with only two deep safeties, since the FB iso block can control one extra defender but not a loaded front. Check the pre-snap alignment of the middle linebacker, if he is sitting tight in the A gap the FB lead has less room to work and you should audible to Double Lead or Power Option instead. Use HB Lead early in a series on first and second down to establish tendencies, then set up PA Boot or PA Post off the same look once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill. Against aggressive user blitzers, trust the fullback to pick up the first threat through the hole rather than trying to outrun the play, patience is key. Pair this with FB Trap and Speed Option Rev in your play-calling sequence so defenders cannot key on the fullback's path every snap.
