The Tight set in the Wishbone formation is the most compressed, run-heavy look the Wishbone offers. It uses 32 personnel: three running backs and two tight ends, with no wide receivers on the field. Both tight ends align tight to the formation on each end of the line. The fullback sits directly behind the quarterback, and two halfbacks are offset in the classic triangle behind him. Other Wishbone sets flex a receiver or split an end. Tight keeps all eleven players inside the numbers, which forces the defense to match with heavy personnel or risk getting outnumbered at the point of attack.
The balanced alignment is the core advantage. With a tight end on both sides and backs able to flow either direction, the defense gets no strength indicator pre-snap. Triple Option, Power Option, and Speed Option Rev put conflict on the unblocked defensive end and the force defender, while FB Trap and HB Lead hit downhill between the tackles. Double Lead gives you two lead blockers on the same gap, which is ideal for short yardage and goal line.
The passing game comes entirely off run action. PA Y Leak, PA Post, and PA Boot rely on the defense crashing on the run fake. Linebackers and safeties who trigger downhill leave the tight ends and leaking backs uncovered. With no wide receivers, your matchups come from isolating tight ends against linebackers or safeties who have bitten on the fake. You also get your backs into the flat against defenders who are still filling run gaps.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense shows seven or fewer in the box, audible to FB Trap or HB Lead. If a safety rolls down to eight, check to PA Post or PA Y Leak to attack the vacated middle.
Use this set heavily on 3rd and short, 4th and 1, and inside the 10, where Double Lead and Power Option can out-leverage goal line fronts. Save play action for 1st and 10 after you have established the run.
On Triple Option, read the defensive end yourself instead of letting the ball auto-hand. Pull it if the end crashes, and pitch late if the force defender or user commits to the QB.
Against man coverage on PA Boot, hot route the playside tight end to a corner or streak and keep the fullback on a flat. This creates a vertical stretch the linebacker covering him cannot handle after biting on the fake.
Mirror your run and play action calls from the same look. Run HB Lead to one side, then run PA Y Leak or PA Boot off the same backfield action to punish users who start keying the lead block.
