Wishbone Tight is the most condensed alignment in the Wishbone family, pulling both split receivers down into tight wing/slot positions next to the tackles while the fullback and both halfbacks stay stacked behind the quarterback in the traditional three-back diamond. The 32 personnel grouping (three backs, two tight ends worth of blocking bodies on the edges) means there is almost no horizontal spacing on the field, which is the entire point: you are forcing the defense to defend a phone booth with eight or nine bodies inside the numbers. Compared to the wider Wishbone sets, Tight sacrifices any real vertical passing threat in exchange for extra edge blockers on Power Option, Speed Option Rev, and Triple Option, plus clean interior double teams on Double Lead and FB Trap.
The alignment creates matchup advantages by attacking defensive personnel logic. Most opponents will check into base 4-3 or 3-4 looks with heavy zone shells against 32 personnel, which means safeties creep down and corners align tight in press or hard flat. That is exactly the leverage you want for PA Boot and PA Y Leak, where a single isolated tight end or leaking back runs into vacated space behind linebackers who have already committed downhill on the run fake. Because the tight wings start inside the numbers, they release into the flat or up the seam without needing a full route stem, so the play-action concepts hit fast before a user-controlled defender can rotate over the top.
Where this set really earns its keep in competitive play is the option game. Power Option, Speed Option Rev, and Triple Option all read the edge defender, and with the extra blocker aligned tight you get a legitimate kick-out or arc block on the end man on the line of scrimmage. Triple Option gives you three answers on one snap (dive, keep, pitch), which punishes users who commit their defender to one gap. PA Post is the shot play off all of it, using the same run action to hold the safety before the isolated tight end or wing breaks across the middle of the field.
Use this set on short yardage, goal line, and clock-killing four-minute drives where the extra blockers and three-back diamond let you grind out four yards per snap.
Read the box pre-snap and count defenders: if the safety is rotated down and the edge is crashing, go to Speed Option Rev or PA Boot to attack away from the pressure instead of forcing an interior run.
Set up PA Post and PA Y Leak by running Double Lead and HB Lead first, then punish the linebackers and safety once they start jumping the dive and lead concepts.
Hot route a tight wing on a corner route or streak against Cover 1 to create an isolated matchup, since the condensed split gives the corner no help and no sideline leverage.
On Triple Option, identify which defender your opponent is user-controlling before the snap, then read the opposite side so your pitch or keep phase attacks unmanned space.
