Double Lead is a downhill run play out of the Wishbone Tight formation with 32 personnel, built to overload the box with two lead blockers in front of the ball carrier. The blocking scheme sends both the fullback and a tailback through the hole ahead of the primary ball carrier, giving you double lead blockers to seal off linebackers at the point of attack. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no route combos to read: the primary read progression is to identify the first defender to flow toward the play side, let your lead blockers engage him, then find the crease created by the second lead blocker before making a one cut upfield.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap since backers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz that can beat you to the hole before the second lead blocker arrives. Check safety alignment for an eighth man in the box, which is the biggest killer of this play because it gives the defense a free hitter that your two lead blockers cannot both account for. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill immediately after the snap, since a smart user player will often abandon coverage responsibilities to jump the lead blocker and blow up the play in the backfield. Base 4-3 or 4-4 fronts with linebackers playing at normal depth are the ideal matchup, since your lead blockers get a clean runway to seal the edge or interior gap. Against Cover 0 or heavy blitz packages with defensive backs crashing the line, this play loses its blocking advantage quickly, so be ready to check to a quicker-hitting run or an audible pass.
Check the defensive front before the snap and look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders since Double Lead thrives against base fronts without extra run support. Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the offense on schedule and set up play-action shots later in the drive. If you see stacked linebackers or an eight man front, consider audibling to FB Trap or Power Option instead since those attack gaps that Double Lead cannot exploit as cleanly. Take manual control of your lead blocker at the snap so you can manually pick off the first unblocked linebacker rather than relying on the CPU logic, which sometimes whiffs against blitzing backers. Pair Double Lead with PA Boot or PA Post in your play-calling sequence, since the heavy run action from this play sells the fake and opens up the same Wishbone Tight formation for explosive shots downfield.
