PA Y Leak is a play-action shot play out of the Wishbone Tight formation designed to sneak the Y (tight end) out the backdoor after selling run fake to a heavy 32 personnel box. The offensive line and fullback execute run blocking fakes toward the play side while the Y releases late from a flat or seam alignment into a leak route behind the linebacker flow, creating a natural window versus teams keyed on stopping the option and lead run game. This is a man beater against aggressive linebackers who bite on the fake, and the primary read progression starts with the leaking Y in the vacated underneath area before working to any secondary outlet or checkdown release from the backfield.
Pre-snap, identify if linebackers are stacked tight to the line expecting run, since that flow is what the leak route exploits for the biggest gains. Check safety depth and shell, a single high safety or 3-4 stack against Wishbone personnel signals man or run support that plays into this play action design. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker or safety spying the leak lane instead of committing to the run fake, this lurk defender can jump the route and blow up the primary read. Look at defensive end and outside linebacker contain, if they crash hard on the run fake it opens the backdoor release for the Y but if they sit and read they can disrupt the release point. Zone defenses with linebackers dropping immediately into passing lanes rather than stepping up on the fake will take away this concept, so know your opponent's tendencies before calling it into a clear pass-read defense.
Run this after establishing HB Lead, FB Trap, or Power Option earlier in the drive so linebackers respect the run fake and step up into the box. Best called on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage where defenses expect run based on Wishbone personnel tendencies. Check pre-snap for stacked box looks with linebackers creeping to the line, since that aggressive alignment is exactly what makes the Y leak route hit wide open. If the defense shows two deep safeties or a clear zone shell, hot route the Y to sit down quicker in the void rather than leaking all the way across, since deep zone defenders can rally late. Sequence this play with Speed Option Rev or Triple Option to keep linebackers guessing between real option keys and the play-action leak, forcing them into false steps that open the middle of the field.
