PA Power O opens with a play-action fake off the Power O run action from Weak I, then attacks the defense with a four man route combo. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route, the slot man breaks vertical up the seam, the inline TE releases on a skinny post crossing back inside, and the backfield check releases into a flat/drag route underneath. This is a man beater built to attack over the top with the seam and corner while the flat route holds linebackers and gives a built in outlet against blitz, with the primary read progression going seam to corner and working down to the flat if the play action freezes the second level.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells are vulnerable since the seam and corner attack the same third. Post-snap, watch for the safety flowing hard to the run fake, if he crashes down the corner route behind him is wide open. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties are the toughest defense for this play since both verticals get taken away. Check for linebacker depth and blitz packages, if the mike blitzes the flat route becomes the immediate answer against the vacated underneath zone. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat against the crossing post route from the tight end.
Usage Tips
Sell the Power O run fake by holding the snap button briefly before dropping back so linebackers bite on the play fake.
Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are keyed to stop the Power run out of Weak I.
Pre-snap, look for single high safety looks since the seam and corner combo stresses one deep defender across two verticals.
Hot route the flat route into a quick out if you see man coverage on the running back to create instant separation against linebackers.
Pair this with actual Power O and HB Gut in your play calling sequence so defenses respect the run fake and stay honest to the play action shot.
