94 Will out of Weak I H Close Off is a power run play built to hit off tackle to the weak side. The diagram shows the HB taking a lead step and cutting hard behind the fullback and the down blocks on the line, with the O-line executing down blocks and the play side guard or tackle pulling to lead through the hole. This is a strict power run concept, not a play-action or pass option, so the read progression starts with the play side double team and kickout block, then flows to the pulling lead blocker for the HB to key his cut off.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and weak side linebacker depth since this play is designed to beat light fronts on the weak side of the formation. Watch for a defender walked down into the box before the snap, which signals the defense is loading up to stop exactly this gap. Post-snap, key the fullback and pulling blocker's kickout block target, if the edge defender squeezes down hard and the fullback loses the block, expect the run to get strung out wide with no cutback lane. This play struggles against gap-sound fronts with a strong weak side end who can hold the point and shed the down block quickly. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing downhill fast, if he times the snap and fills the play side gap immediately, cut this play or check to Counter F to attack the opposite side.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs when the defense shows a light box or has walked a linebacker outside to defend the weak side flow. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see extra numbers stacked to the play side, consider audibling to Counter F to hit the opposite gap with similar deception. Use HB Gut as a change of pace out of the same look since both plays start with similar backfield action but attack different gaps, keeping linebackers honest. If the defense sells out with an inside blitz look at the mike, this play can still hit if your fullback gets a clean kickout on the edge defender. Pair this with PA Power O later in a series once the defense starts flowing hard to stop the run, since the play-action off the same power look will hold linebackers and open up Flanker Drive or Stick behind them.
