Slot Fade X-Choice is a man beater built around isolation leverage on the outside. The slot receiver runs a fade up the seam or sideline to attack a single high safety or a matched corner, while the X receiver runs a choice route that breaks based on the defender's leverage, giving you a built-in answer against both man and zone coverage. Out of Weak I with 20 personnel, the backfield action holds linebackers just long enough for the primary read, which starts with the slot fade against single coverage and works down to the X-Choice as the breakdown or hot route against underneath zone drops.
Look for a single high safety pre-snap, since this tells you the slot fade has one on one coverage with no help over the top. Check corner alignment on the slot receiver, if he is in soft coverage or off man, the fade window shrinks and you should progress to the X-Choice route instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal underneath zone or blitz look, which favors the choice route settling in the void. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender will take away the fade unless you have a size advantage, so use the choice route as your zone beater answer in that shell. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate area can bait a quarterback into the choice route read, so scan for a defender sitting flat footed reading the quarterback's eyes before committing to that throw.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since the slot fade is your shot play against single high with a corner in press or trail technique.
If you see two high safeties rotate down or the corner shade outside pre-snap, work the X-Choice first since it will settle in or break away from underneath defenders in zone.
Use hot routes to release your inline blocker or fullback into a check down flat route if the defense brings extra pressure off the edge, since this gives you an outlet against nano blitzes.
This play works best on second and medium to third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, and it pairs well with PA X-Dig from the same set since both attack vertical windows off similar formation and personnel.
Sequence this play after HB Stretch or HB Gut to get linebackers flowing downhill on run fits, which opens up the slot fade window against man coverage even more.
