Breakdown

PA Power O out of Strong I Twins Over sells the Power O run action to the strong side before releasing two receivers into a vertical stretch on the boundary side. The diagram shows one receiver breaking into a corner route toward the sideline off the play fake while a second receiver runs a wheel style route up the numbers, creating a high low stretch on the same third of the field. This is a play action shot play designed to punish run heavy defenses and single high safety looks, with the primary read starting on the corner route breaking outside and working back inside to the wheel route if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Key the strong safety and linebacker depth before the snap: if they are sitting shallow expecting run fits, this play beats Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells hard because the flat defender has to respect the play fake. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the flat or lurking underneath the corner route, since that is the biggest threat to the primary read and will force the check down to the wheel route. Zone defenses that stay disciplined and keep a defender over the top of the corner route while passing off the wheel route to a linebacker in man coverage can shut down both options. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the worst case scenario for the defense, since both the corner route and wheel route create natural separation off the run fake. If the defense shows Cover 2 or two deep safeties pre-snap and does not bite on the fake, expect the corner route to be squeezed and prioritize the wheel route or check the ball down quickly.

Usage Tips

Run this play on early downs like first or second and short when the defense expects Power O or HB Blast out of this same personnel group to keep linebackers and safeties honest.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties rotate down after the snap that is a run key, hold the fake a beat longer to let the corner route clear the flat defender.

Use play action rollouts and Rollout Smash from this set in the same sequence to keep defenders reacting to run fits instead of dropping into zone shells.

If the CPU or user defender jumps the corner route immediately off play action, work the throw back to the wheel route since it should be climbing behind the flat defender.

Pair this call with Inside Zone Split and Power O on early downs to build a run heavy tendency, then hit this shot play once the linebackers start crashing downhill on the fake.
