HB Blast out of Strong I Twins Over is a downhill power run play that sends the halfback straight through the A gap behind the fullback's iso lead block. The offensive line blocks down with double teams at the point of attack while the fullback isolates on the first linebacker to show through the hole, clearing a lane for the HB. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the fullback's lead block: follow him through the initial crease and cut off his shoulder based on how the linebacker flows.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth presnap, if he is sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage he can beat the fullback to the point of attack and blow up the iso block. Look for a stacked box with eight or more defenders, this is the clearest sign HB Blast should be checked out of at the line. Key on the fullback as the ball carrier's blocking indicator, if you are on defense, attacking the fullback with a user linebacker before he reaches the second level kills this run cold. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a run blitz or nano blitz package from the linebackers is the biggest threat to this play since extra bodies flow to the A gap immediately after the snap. Zone coverages that keep linebackers reading run first, such as base 4-3 fronts with no blitz called, tend to get gashed since the second level flows late and the iso block wins.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a numbers advantage and should hit hard downhill.
Use this against defenses that show a lot of movement or slanting fronts since the iso block is designed to seal off one hard-flowing linebacker.
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest.
Pair HB Blast with PA Power O and PA Verticals from the same Strong I Twins Over set so the play action looks identical presnap, forcing linebackers to freeze on run fakes later in the game.
Sequence this with Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so defenders start cheating toward zone runs, then hit them with the more direct iso blast for a bigger gap.
User the fullback manually if you are confident in your blocking reads, this lets you pick your own gap based on real-time linebacker flow instead of relying on the AI iso block.
