Dagger from Split Backs Slot pairs a deep vertical seam route from the inner slot receiver with an underneath dig route breaking hard across the middle from the outside receiver, creating a high low stretch on one side of the field. The outside receiver to the right runs a short in cut while the backside receiver runs a corner route up the sideline, and the tight end releases up the seam as the primary vertical threat. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by clearing out the intermediate zone with the seam runner and settling the dig into the vacated void, with the deep corner route serving as a man beater outlet if the defense shows single high or press man. The primary read starts with the seam route to see if it splits the safeties, then progresses to the dig sitting down in the throwing lane underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in two high or one high shell since that dictates whether the seam route or the corner route becomes the primary answer. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a sim blitz or Tampa 2 look can jump the dig route right as it settles. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, if they widen with the flat route or bite on run action, the dig route will have a clean throwing lane. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the seam route, so watch for a corner playing outside shade pre-snap as a tell. Cover 4 or quarters shells can squeeze the seam route hard, so be ready to work the dig or check down quickly if the deep safeties collapse.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties before the snap since Dagger is designed to split them with the seam route and settle the dig underneath in the window they vacate.
If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, prioritize the deep corner route on the backside since it attacks the boundary defender in man or the deep third seam.
Use hot routes to convert the dig into a deeper crosser if you see Tampa 2 sitting a linebacker in that exact throwing lane.
Pair this play with Curl Flat or Shallow Cross in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick underneath timing throws.
This play shines on second and long or third and medium situations where the dig route has enough distance to move the sticks while the seam route holds the safeties.
