Deep Comeback out of the Slot Split Backs 21 personnel sends four receivers vertical to attack every level of the defense, with the outside receiver on the right running a deep comeback back to the sideline near the sticks. The two middle routes climb vertically up the seams while the left X runs an out breaking route underneath, and the flat runner near the backfield settles short as a checkdown option. This is a man beater built to punish tight coverage on the boundary, using the comeback route's hard stick and break to create separation against a trailing corner, with the vertical seams occupying linebackers and safeties to open up the sideline throw as the primary read.
Pre-snap, identify press man coverage on the outside corner since this route is designed to counter exactly that leverage with the sharp comeback break. Watch the deep safety shell. A two high safety look forces the seam routes to be respected, which can delay underneath help on the comeback route. Post-snap, key on the corner's hips. If he opens up and turns to run vertically with the receiver, expect the comeback break to create separation, but if he sits and reads the quarterback the throw becomes risky. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting under the comeback route and a deep third corner can take this route away entirely, forcing the quarterback to work the seams or checkdown instead. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender dropping into the throwing lane on the comeback, especially in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where defenders can sit on the sideline break and jump the route.
Target the deep comeback as your first read against man coverage where the corner is playing tight or with an inside shade, since the hard plant and break creates instant separation toward the sideline.
Check the safety alignment before the snap. Against a single high safety look to the seam routes first if the corner over the comeback route is playing off, then work back to the comeback on your second read.
Use the flat route near the backfield as a checkdown against pressure looks or when the defense shows Cover 2 with corners sitting on the comeback.
Pair this play with Curl Flat or Y Stick Lion earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on shorter routes, then hit the Deep Comeback for a big chunk gain when corners start jumping underneath routes.
Best called on second and long or third and medium situations where the sideline route timing lines up with the down and distance, giving you a built in checkdown if the comeback window closes.
