Smash Swing out of the Split Backs Slot formation pairs a classic Smash concept on the boundary with a swing route out of the backfield, giving the quarterback a full field high low read. The backside runs a corner route off the slot receiver and a flat route from the outside receiver to stretch the sideline vertically, while the play side combines a deep vertical seam with a swing route out to the flat and a short curl from the inline TE. Both backs stay in to help sort out protection before working their routes, making this a zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by isolating the flat defender and the deep half safety, with the primary read starting at the corner route and working down to the swing as the check down.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high, this play is built to punish that shell with the corner over flat combo. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks under the corner route or widens too far, the window behind him opens for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, a shallow drop or blitz creates a natural throwing lane for the seam route up the middle. Man coverage on the swing back is a green light, since backs rarely get consistent coverage from linebackers on the swing release. Cover 3 with a hard flat squeeze can take away the underneath options, forcing the quarterback to trust the corner route or check it down late to the swing.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs against two high safety shells since the corner route over the flat route is a natural Cover 2 killer.
Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if he is playing a hard flat zone or man press underneath, the corner route behind him should open up immediately.
Hot route the swing back into a quick flare if you see a blitz look, it becomes an instant answer against nano blitzes and gives the quarterback a safety valve outside the tackle box.
Pair this with FB Belly or HB Inside from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then hit them with Smash Swing once they start crowding the box.
Works well on second and medium since the corner and swing combo gives multiple layers underneath and over the top without needing a long developing shot play.
If the defense shows Cover 3, look to the seam route from the play side receiver since the deep third defender has to choose between the seam and the corner route on the backside.
