HB Inside out of Split Backs Slot is a straight dive run play designed to hit the A gap quickly behind interior double team blocking. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the fullback (red icon) attacking the play side gap alongside the halfback, with two receivers running vertical routes up the numbers that hold the corners and safeties honest. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the halfback identifying whichever A or B gap the double team blocks open, cutting off the fullback's lead block.
Defensive Reads
Check the box count before the snap, if there are seven or more defenders stacked inside the play is likely dead on arrival. Watch the middle linebacker's depth, if he is sitting shallow at four yards or closer he can beat the fullback to the hole and blow up the dive. Identify whether the defense is in a run blitz or nano blitz look with defensive tackles shooting gaps, since that disrupts the double team before it forms. On the user side, take control of a linebacker or safety and fill downhill immediately at the snap rather than reading the mesh point, since HB Inside hits fast. This run is most vulnerable to 46 Bear fronts and heavy inside blitz packages, while it succeeds against base 4-3 or nickel fronts with light boxes.
Usage Tips
Run this play when you see six or fewer defenders in the box, since the fullback lead block needs a numbers advantage to seal the interior. Use this against defenses stacked in nickel or dime personnel that are light in the box expecting pass on early downs. Pair HB Inside with FB Belly and FB Dive HB Motion in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which gap the fullback leads through. If the linebackers start crashing down hard after a few reps, counter by calling Curl Flat or Double Slant off the same formation to punish overaggressive run fits with quick throws. Best used on first and second down in short yardage or when you need to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before dialing up play-action.
