China Special is a play-action flood concept out of Split Backs Slot that stresses one side of the field with three vertical stems. The two receivers to the closed side run a deep out breaking to the sideline and a corner route from the inline TE stemming up and outside, while the slot receiver runs a shallow drag across the middle for a man beater option underneath. The backside receiver runs a deep post-corner clearout, and the play-action fake from the split backfield holds linebackers, making the primary read the corner route first, working down to the deep out, with the shallow drag as the checkdown against pressure or blitz.
Defensive Reads
Identify pre-snap whether the defense shows one high or two high safeties, since a rotated single high shell signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the flood side will be outnumbered by defenders. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone player after the snap, because if they widen to cover the out route it opens a throwing lane behind them for the corner route. Key the middle linebacker and any robber defender dropping into the shallow drag lane, since a disciplined defender sitting on the drag can bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where two deep safeties can double the corner route and the flat defender squeezes the out, so expect a tighter throwing window in those looks. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot defender is where the shallow drag hits hardest, so track user defenders lurking underneath before committing to that read.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the snap since the corner and out combo stretches the deep quarter defenders vertically and horizontally. If the CB is playing outside leverage press man, hot route the corner route to a fade or throw the deep out early before the flood defender can undercut it. Use this play on second and long or third and medium when the defense expects a run based on the split backs personnel, since the play-action fake holds linebackers and opens the intermediate window. Pair this call with FB Belly or HB Inside earlier in a series to sell the run action and get defenders flowing downhill before hitting China Special off the same formation look. Against zone heavy defenses, prioritize the shallow drag as a quick answer if the flood route gets jumped by a robber or lurking linebacker.
