Overview
Punt Block 44 Even is a punt return unit set in the Special formation, not an offensive look. It stacks the line with a balanced front: four rushers on each side of the long snapper, with the remaining defenders assigned to the gunners and the deep return. The symmetrical alignment is the key difference from overloaded block sets. Because it does not tip which side the pressure comes from, the punt team's protection cannot slide to a strength before the snap. That makes it a useful call when you want to threaten a block without showing your hand.
The set carries three calls that cover the full risk spectrum. Straight Rush sends the front at the punter for a true block attempt. 8 Up Safe Man keeps defenders home and locks man coverage on potential receivers to shut down fakes. Squeeze Block applies interior pressure to collapse the pocket while still giving your returner a chance to field the ball. With all three calls available from one pre-snap look, your opponent has to guess whether you are coming after the kick, protecting against a fake, or setting up the return.
In place of isolating receivers, this set creates matchups along the protection line. An even four and four split forces the personal protector and wings to account for pressure on both edges. When the offense leaves a gap, a user-controlled edge rusher can shoot it. The balanced shell also limits the fake punt passes and direct snaps that would otherwise punish one-sided block schemes.
Strengths

Weaknesses
- Straight Rush sacrifices return blocking entirely, so a clean punt often gives the offense a long roll and poor field position for you
- Roughing the kicker and running into the kicker penalties are live risks, especially when you user an edge rusher and overrun the punter
- Aggressive rush calls leave gunners uncovered, so a fake punt pass or a quick direct snap can convert a fourth down if you guess wrong
- Even without the Straight Rush call, the heavy front means fewer blockers downfield, which limits big returns compared to dedicated return sets
- Opponents who notice you only use this set in block situations can check into a fake or a rugby style punt to exploit your rush tendency
Usage Tips
Call Straight Rush when you trail late and need a momentum swing, or when the punter is backed up inside his own 15 with little room to operate
Default to 8 Up Safe Man on fourth and short near midfield, where fake punts are most likely, and against opponents who have already shown a fake
Use Squeeze Block when you want to pressure the punt without giving up the return, particularly against short or low punters who are prone to shanks
User the edge rusher on the side with the weaker wing blocker and take an angle toward the kick point, not the punter's body, to cut roughing penalties
Rotate all three calls from this set throughout the game so your opponent cannot read your intent from formation selection alone
