Slot Drive out of Singleback Y Trips TE Slot is a Cover 4 beater built on a drive concept paired with vertical clear-outs. The two outside trips receivers push vertical up the field to occupy deep quarters defenders, while the inside slot runs a drive route underneath, crossing the field flat to open grass behind the linebackers. The tight end runs a deep in that sits down in the middle of the field, and the backside receiver runs a comeback style route breaking back to the sideline, giving the quarterback a full-field progression: read the drive route first, come back to the deep in, then work backside to the comeback if the middle gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties, this usually signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 and tells you the drive route and deep in will have room to work underneath. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel linebacker depth, if they sit shallow expecting the drive route, look to the tight end's deep in sitting behind them. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks hard to cover the drive route, the tight end's in-cut behind him becomes the primary answer. Man coverage with a single high safety is the toughest matchup here, since the drive route lacks natural separation against tight man technique, favor the backside comeback in that case. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow middle zone (lurk), this play's crossing routes are vulnerable to a jumped throwing lane if the user reads the drive route early.
Usage Tips
Use this on second and medium or third and short when you expect Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells since the vertical routes stress quarters defenders and open the drive route underneath.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, trust the drive route to hit fast against zone drops.
Hot route the backside comeback receiver to a quick out if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, this gets the ball out before a user blitzer arrives.
Pair this with Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on vertical shells, then come back to Slot Drive once they start jumping the deep routes.
Against zone heavy defenses, use PA Slot Cross or PA Slot Wheel as changeups off this same formation to sell the drive action and hit explosive plays over the top.
