Slot 2 Buc is a play-action flood concept out of Singleback Y Trips TE Slot that overloads one side of the field with three vertical stems. The backside receiver runs a deep dig back across the field, the trips side stacks a corner route from the TE outside him, a deep go from the outside receiver, and a short curl underneath from the inside slot, while the RB checks down on a shallow flat route out of the backfield after selling the run fake. This is a Cover 3 beater built to flood one zone with three levels (flat, curl, corner) so the primary read progression starts with the corner route, works down to the curl sitting underneath, and checks to the flat route or backside dig if the corner and curl are both taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the strength and depth of the safeties: a single high safety with corners playing off is the green light for the trips side flood since three defenders cannot cover three levels in Cover 3. Watch the flat defender or nickel corner at the snap: if he sinks with the corner route instead of squatting on the curl, the curl becomes wide open for an easy completion. Key the weakside linebacker's drop on the play-action fake, since a linebacker who bites hard on the run fake leaves the underneath curl and flat uncontested. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0, user the deep middle defender to take away the corner route first, then rally to the dig since man coverage on the flood concept is beatable but the backside dig against a trailing defender is the fastest answer. If the defense shows two high safeties with press corners, expect the corner route to be squeezed by outside-in help, so bail to the curl or flat quickly before the play-action fake eats up clock and invites pressure.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when you have shown inside zone or power looks from this same personnel group to sell the play-action fake and freeze the linebackers.
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks since Cover 3 and Cover 1 with three deep defenders on the trips side get flooded hard by the corner, curl, and flat combo.
If you see Cover 4 or a two high shell rotate to the trips side, prioritize the backside dig since that defender is isolated against a lone underneath zone or man defender.
Hot route the flat back to a wheel route against man coverage if the defense shows blitz, since the natural pick from the TE stem can spring the RB open vertically.
