HB Zone Wk is the weak side inside zone run out of Singleback Y Trips TE Slot with 12 personnel. The offensive line and both tight ends flow their zone steps toward the weak side while the HB takes the handoff and reads the blocking surface to find the widest running lane, pressing the hole before making a cut upfield. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the HB's one cut off the weak side double team and puller flow, picking whichever gap the defense overplays away from.
Count the defenders in the box before the snap and if the weak side has fewer defenders than the play side, expect this run to hit for positive yardage. Watch linebacker depth: linebackers sitting shallow and reading the mesh point can trigger a quick flow to the cutback lane, so a user spy or linebacker staying home stops the initial cut. Identify if the defense is running a weak side blitz or nano blitz package, since a fast edge crash from the weak side can blow up the zone scheme before the double team sets. Look at the safety alignment; if a safety cheats down into the box pre-snap, the natural cutback lane the HB relies on gets clogged fast. Man coverage on the outside receivers usually means fewer extra defenders in the box, which favors this run, while zone shells with linebackers sitting in run fits shut down the cutback read.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm the weak side has a lighter box count before calling this run, since it hits away from the trips WR bunch. Use motion or an audible if the defense shows an overload front to the play side, since a heavy weak side front kills the natural cutback lane. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same set so defenders keying run flow get misdirected between play strength and cutback runs. Mix in Y-Trail or PA Slot Cross off the same personnel to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from crashing downhill on run reads. Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are not yet in dime or heavy pass shells, since light boxes make the cutback lane easier to find.
