HB Power O out of Singleback Y Off Trio is a gap scheme run play designed to pull a blocker across the formation and create a lead blocker through the hole. The play art shows the HB aligned in the backfield taking a lateral step before hitting the point of attack behind the pulling guard, with the offensive line executing down blocks to seal the backside while the playside edge is kicked out. This is a downhill power run that wins with numbers at the point of attack rather than a man or zone passing concept, and the primary read is the pulling blocker's path: follow the puller through the designated gap and cut off his block based on how the defensive front reacts.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth and flow pre-snap. Stacked or downhill linebackers who key the mesh point quickly can beat the pulling guard to the hole and blow up the play. Identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front like a 4-3 Under or 46 Normal, since these fronts bring extra gap defenders that can outnumber the blocking scheme. User-controlled defenders shooting the backside A-gap or crashing down hard on the puller are the biggest threat to this concept, so look for defenders abandoning zone assignments to attack downhill. Check for safety rotation into the box pre-snap. An eighth defender in the run fit or a strong safety creeping down signals the defense is sitting on the run and Power O may get stuffed. Look for edge defenders who squeeze down instead of maintaining outside leverage, since the kick out block relies on getting movement on that edge defender to spring the cutback lane.
Usage Tips
Run this in short yardage and goal line situations where you need a physical, downhill gap scheme to move the pile.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider bouncing to a play like Slants or Curl Flat off the same set to keep the defense honest instead of forcing the run into a loaded front.
Use the pulling guard as your visual key. Press the hole and let the puller's block dictate whether you cut it up inside or bounce it outside.
Pair this with PA Cross Dig or PA Y Glance from the same Y Off Trio set so the play-action look off Power O's downhill action freezes linebackers and opens up shots over the middle.
Mix in Power O early in drives to establish run tendencies, then dial up Four Verticals or Mesh later to punish defenses selling out against the run.
