Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Singleback Y Off Trio sends all four eligible receivers vertical to stretch the field horizontally and vertically, with the outside receivers stemming straight up the numbers, the slot receiver climbing to the middle of the field on a bender to sit between the safeties, and the tight end pushing a vertical seam from a tighter alignment. The offensive line stays home in a five man protection to hold up against a four man rush. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater that overloads deep zones and also stresses man coverage on vertical routes, with the primary read starting on the middle bender against the safety help, then working outside to the numbers routes based on cornerback leverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and spacing since two deep safeties cheating wide open up the middle bender route immediately. Watch cornerback alignment on the outside receivers, since press man leaves them vulnerable to a clean release into the vertical stem. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, since a fast sink into the deep middle zone can jump the bender route and bait a turnover. This concept struggles against a true Cover 4 or quarters shell where four defenders can match verticals man to man from depth. Watch for a disguised blitz that brings extra rushers, since the five man protection can get overloaded if the defense sends more than four and the quarterback has no time for the deep routes to develop.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for two deep safeties or a single high safety before the snap, since this concept is built to attack both shells differently.

Against Cover 2, target the deep middle bender route sitting between the safeties in the honey hole before the safeties can close the window.

Against Cover 3, look outside to the boundary vertical routes since the single high safety cannot cover all three deep thirds.

Use hot routes to convert the tight end's seam into a shorter option against heavy man pressure if your protection cannot hold up long enough for the verts to develop.

Pair this play with HB Slant 18 or Curl Flat in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest on shorter routes, then hit Four Verticals once the defense starts jumping underneath throws.
