Wide Zone Wk is a weakside wide zone run out of Singleback Wing Slot Over with 12 personnel, designed to stretch the defensive front and get the running back to the edge before cutting upfield. The offensive line flows laterally toward the weak side with reach blocks and combo blocks at the point of attack, using the extra tight end and wing back to seal the edge and create a wall for the cutback lane. The primary read progression starts with the playside edge defender's leverage, then works to the first inside linebacker's flow to determine whether to bounce it outside or cut it back through the vacated B gap.
Check the strong safety and free safety depth before the snap, if they are both parked deep at 10 plus yards, the box is likely light and this run has a favorable numbers count. Watch the weakside defensive end's first step, if he crashes hard inside to take away the cutback, bounce it outside behind the wing tight end's block. Key the playside inside linebacker's downhill trigger, a slow or hesitant linebacker flow means the cutback lane will be there. Look for a Mike linebacker showing blitz or walked up pre-snap, since that often signals a run blitz designed to beat zone schemes by shooting the gap the back is reading. Against stacked eight-man boxes or run commit defenses, this play loses its blocking advantage, so be ready to check to a play-action or dropback pass in the same set instead.
Attack defenses that are showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap.
Use the wing tight end as your eye candy read, if he seals his defender outside, stay patient and let the cutback lane develop.
Pair this with PA Middle or PA Boot from the same set once you have established the run, since both plays sell the same zone action and freeze linebackers who are keying run fits.
Hot route the backside tight end into a shallow drag if you see man coverage with no extra run support, this gives you a checkrelease outlet against blitz-heavy fronts.
Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to play base personnel instead of nickel or dime packages.
