PA Middle out of Singleback Wing Slot Over sells the inside zone run action to the play side before working the middle of the field off the fake. The play action freezes linebackers and safeties reading run fits, opening up a crossing route combo and a deep middle shot for the safety valve. This is a play-action pass designed to attack zone coverage that bites on the run fake, with the primary read starting at the deep middle route and working down to the intermediate crosser if the safety stays deep.
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the middle of the field will be wide open for the crossing route. Identify single high safety looks pre snap since that alignment usually means the deep middle route will have a soft spot to sit in behind the second level. Post snap, track any user controlled safety or linebacker sitting in a lurk position over the middle, that defender can jump the crosser and turn it into a turnover. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with aggressive run support get gashed by this play, while disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells that keep both safeties deep can take away the vertical shot and force you to check down. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the box can be an issue if protection breaks down, so account for edge pressure with your hot routes if the offensive line shows a numbers disadvantage.
Run this from run-heavy personnel counts like 2nd and short or 1st and 10 so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties. Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the box is your green light to take the deep shot over the middle. If the defense shows two high shells post snap, hot route the underneath crosser into a quick out or curl to beat the shorter zone drop. Pair this with Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the run fake, then hit PA Middle once linebackers start creeping up on run reads.
