HB Stretch Alert Bubble is an outside zone run with a built in RPO alert that lets you throw a bubble screen if the defense crashes down on the run fit. The offensive line flows laterally to stretch the defense horizontally, giving the HB a track to bounce outside or cut back based on the flow of the play side defenders. The primary read starts pre snap: check the alignment of the flanking defender and slot defender to decide if the bubble alert is live, then post snap read the play side edge defender and second level flow to decide bounce, cut back, or pull the bubble throw.
Watch the play side flanking defender pre snap, if that defender is sitting outside soft or bailing into a zone drop, the bubble alert is the higher value option. Identify the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash the run fit immediately open up the bubble throw behind them. Key the safety rotation post snap, a hard rotation toward the run side often means a nano blitz or extra run support defender, which signals you should get the ball out on the bubble quickly. Man coverage with press alignment on the outside receivers shuts down the bubble alert, so if you see man match shells or press corners pre snap, commit to the stretch run and trust your zone blocking. Against contain focused defenders who stay wide and squeeze the edge, the cutback lane becomes the better run answer than trying to bounce the stretch outside.
Use pre snap motion or a formation flip to bait the defense into showing whether it is playing run first or covering the bubble alert receiver, since this play punishes overaggressive flow to the run side. If you see a slot defender or overhang crashing hard toward the box before the snap, pull the trigger on the bubble alert immediately instead of handing it off. This is a strong second and short or first and ten call because it keeps both run and quick pass options on the table without needing a hard down and distance commitment. Pair it with Wide Zone Wk earlier in a series so the defense has already seen outside zone action, then come back to HB Stretch Alert Bubble to test if linebackers are over pursuing the stretch look. Against man coverage, the bubble alert is low value since defenders will trail the screen receiver, so lean on the actual stretch run and trust your blocking scheme to win on the edge. Save PA Boot from this set as a companion call once the defense starts sitting on the bubble alert, since it attacks the same edge defenders with play action.
