RPO Glance Post out of Shotgun Wing Tight Z shows a single receiver isolated to the boundary running a glance post that breaks from the sideline back across the middle of the field, giving the QB a run-pass conditioned read tied to the box count. The offensive line executes an inside zone run blocking scheme up front, so the quarterback reads the second level defender (usually a linebacker or slot corner) to decide whether to hand off or pull and throw the glance post. This is a true RPO built as a man beater against tight man coverage on the isolated receiver, since the post breaks away from trail technique, and it also punishes light boxes that crash down on the run fake. Primary read progression starts with the run/pass conditioned key defender at the second level, then works to the glance post if that defender widens or bites on run action.
Pre-snap, identify the defender aligned over the isolated receiver and check if he is playing tight man technique with no deep safety rotation, which signals the glance post will win easily. Watch linebacker depth and alignment at the second level since a shaded or walked-up linebacker is the run/pass conditioned key the quarterback is reading, and if he stays home the offense is more likely to hand it off. Post-snap, user the deep safety or a lurking linebacker to sit in the throwing lane of the glance post, since a defender with eyes on the quarterback can jump the route before it clears the second level. This play is vulnerable to a well-timed blitz off the edge that disrupts the mesh point before the quarterback can process the RPO key, so disguising pressure with a delayed linebacker blitz can force a bad decision. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a safety sitting in the middle of the field can shut down the post window if the safety reads the quarterback's eyes quickly, so playing off coverage and staying square to the receiver removes the man beater advantage entirely.
Check the box count pre-snap and identify if the defense is in a light box (6 or fewer) which tells you to lean run, or a stacked box which tells you to lean toward the glance post read. Look for man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside with no safety help over the top on the isolated receiver, since that is when the post window opens up fastest. Use this play on early downs like first and second down to stay balanced and keep the defense honest between run and pass. Pair this with RPO Alert Glance in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on a single route concept, since both plays share similar run action but different pass conditioned reads. If the defense starts selling out to stop the inside zone look, sequence into Duo or Inside Zone from the same set to keep punishing light boxes without tipping your hand. Against teams that spam Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, hot route the post into a corner or out route to attack the leverage of a hard-charging cornerback.
