HB Swing out of Shotgun Wide Trips is a quick-hitting checkdown play built around the running back releasing out to the flat while the rest of the route concept occupies underneath and intermediate zones. The offensive line executes a half slide protection, prioritizing the swing route as a built-in outlet if the trips side routes are covered downfield. This is primarily a zone beater and a blitz-beater since the running back can leak out before pressure arrives, though it also works against man coverage when a linebacker struggles to stay in phase on the release. The primary read progression starts with the shortest developing trips route, then quickly works to the HB swing as the checkdown if underneath defenders sink into deeper zones.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment, since linebackers sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage will jump the swing route and turn it into a negative play. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield, as a smart human opponent will often key the running back release and undercut the swing for a pick six opportunity. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with underneath defenders sinking into deep thirds or quarters tend to leave the flat exposed, making this play highly effective against those shells. Man coverage with a linebacker in man on the running back is a red flag, since a physical defender can shadow the swing and eliminate the easy completion, so be ready to progress to the trips side routes instead. Blitz-heavy defensive looks with all-out pressure and no delayed defender covering the backfield are prime situations for the swing route to hit big after the catch in open space.
Use this play on third and short or second and manageable when you need a safe, high floor completion to keep the offense on schedule.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a two high shell with soft underneath zones, since that tells you the swing route will have a wide open throwing lane in the flat.
If the defense shows blitz with linebackers crashing downhill, get the ball out to the HB swing immediately since it acts as a natural hot route against pressure.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Switch Verts in the same set to condition the defense into respecting deep shots, which opens up the swing route as a change of pace call.
Motion the HB pre-snap if allowed to get a pre-snap read on man versus zone, since a defender following the motion confirms man coverage and tells you to expect a linebacker in trail technique on the swing.
