The three-receiver trips side creates a natural triangle stretch while the backside single receiver and running back check release or flare, giving you a hot route outlet against overload blitzes. With 10 personnel spread wide, the offensive line slides protection to the trips side, so the primary read starts with the outside trips receiver working back to the inside slot hitch, then progresses backside if the boundary corner sits off in zone.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, since a two high shell with off corners tells you the hitch windows will be wide open on both the trips and backside sides. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, if corners are pressed and playing man, you need to hot route a slant or quick out because the hitch route will get jammed and rerouted at the line. Post-snap, key the flat defender on the trips side, if he sinks under the outside hitch instead of widening to the running back, that tells you zone coverage and you should work the middle hitch immediately. Beware user linebackers spying the middle hitch route as a lurk defender, since a jumped throw into that window is the most common pick six risk against this concept. This play struggles against Cover 2 Man and aggressive press man schemes with underneath robber help, so check for a shaded safety creeping down before committing to the trips side read.
Use this against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells where corners are playing off man or zone at 7 plus yards of cushion, since the hitch routes sit down right in the soft spot before the corner can drive.
Pre-snap, check the flat defenders and curl-flat zone droppers on the trips side, if you see two defenders bracketing that side, work directly to the backside single receiver hitch for a clean throw.
Hot route the running back into a quick swing or flare against overload pressure looks, this gives you a built-in answer to nano blitzes and five-man fronts without needing a full protection slide.
