Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Wide Trips sends all four eligible receivers vertical up the seams and numbers, stretching the defense from sideline to sideline with no shallow crossers to muddy the picture. There is no run action or play-action element here, this is a straight dropback pass built to attack both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep zones. Blocking is a standard five man protection with the running back releasing late or staying in as an extra blocker depending on your hot route adjustments, and the primary read progression starts with the seam route from the trips side before working to the backside vertical if the safety cheats over.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap, this signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the seams are the priority target since the corners will be playing underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the seams instead of spying the running back or blitzing, this is a zone shell and you should work the sideline verticals against the corners. If the middle of field safety rotates late to one side pre-snap, that is a strong indicator of Cover 3, take the backside vertical away from the rotation for a favorable one on one matchup. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep middle lurk position can rob the inside seam, so track the user's positioning through your dropback and adjust your first read accordingly. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the worst matchup for the defense, so if you see man press alignment across the board this play should be an automatic go to call for a big play.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this is a prime Cover 2 beater because the seam routes split the zone before the corners or safeties can rally over the top.

Use your pre-snap motion or a hot route to slide the running back into a flat route or check release if you diagnose a blitz, this gives your quarterback an outlet and protects against nano blitzes off the edge.

Against Cover 3, key the middle of field safety, if he bites on the trips side seam the backside single receiver vertical is usually open for an explosive gain.

Pair this play with Wheel Curls and Hitch Mills in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow combos and verticals, this forces defenders to respect both levels and opens up cheese seams over the middle.

Best called on second and long or any down where you need a chunk play, avoid third and short situations since there is no built in checkdown outside of the running back.
