HB Base out of Shotgun Wide Trips HB WK is an inside zone run play built off a 10 personnel spread look, using the trips receiver bunch to pull defenders away from the box and create favorable numbers for the offensive line. The blocking scheme flows the HB toward the play side with the line executing zone steps and combo blocks at the point of attack, reading the first down lineman to the play side to decide whether to bang it inside or bounce it outside. This is not a play-action or RPO look, it is a pure downhill run designed to punish light boxes and defenses that overcommit to stopping the trips side passing concepts in this set.
Look for linebacker depth at the snap, if the mike and will are sitting back in pass drops rather than stepping up, the alley is wide open for a cutback. Watch the play side defensive end and 3-technique, if they crash hard down the line the HB should bounce it outside off the edge. Identify if the defense is in a nickel or dime sub package to defend the trips side, lighter boxes with only five or six in the run fit get gashed easily by this concept. Be wary of a stacked front with an extra linebacker or safety cheating down into the box pre-snap, that alignment is designed specifically to shut down inside zone runs like this one. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the trips side pre-snap can leave a natural cutback lane, so key on where the user is aligned before the snap to decide the ball carrier vision.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and count the box, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this run has a clean lane. Use the trips formation to bait the defense into rolling coverage or blitzing from the passing strength, which weakens the run fit on the backside. Motion is not necessary here, but if the defense shows an overload blitz to the trips side, consider hot routing the HB to check release into a flat route as a pressure escape valve. Pair HB Base with Quick Slants or Stick from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run recognition once they see the trips look. Best used on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots later in the drive from this identical formation.
