Quick Reference

Breakdown

Stick Y Slant is a quick-game concept out of Shotgun Trips Y Iso that combines a stick route from the trips side with the Y (tight end) running a slant across the middle of the field. This is a man and zone beater designed to get the ball out fast, attacking underneath zone voids or picking on linebackers who cannot cover the slant in man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the Y slant working inside leverage, then works out to the stick concept if the middle is clogged, using the flat route as a checkdown against blitz or aggressive underneath coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers sitting at five yards or less will jump the Y slant and bait a user pick six if you force the throw. Check safety alignment before the snap, since two high shells leave more room underneath for the slant while single high with a robber technique can sit right in the throwing lane. Look for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on the trips receivers, since this signals the slant should win quickly against a linebacker in coverage. Post snap, respect any user controlled defender flashing down into the shallow middle zone since that is a common lurk spot designed to jump this exact route. Cover 3 sink defenders and Tampa 2 middle linebacker drops are the primary coverage shells that shut this play down, so have the stick or flat route ready as the alternate progression when you see those shells develop.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and short since it is a timing based concept that gets the ball out in under two seconds and avoids negative plays. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or single high, since the Y slant will have more room to work against two high shells with softer underneath zones. If you see man coverage with a linebacker on the Y, hot route the outside receiver on a quick out or speed out to create a natural pick and separation window. Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting on the run, which opens up the Y slant lane over the middle. Sequence this with Mesh or Mesh Dig later in the drive since defenders who key on the slant tendency will be susceptible to the deeper crossing routes.
