Mesh X Dig is a man beater built off the classic mesh concept, pairing a tight crossing pattern underneath with a deep dig route breaking over the top to attack the middle of the field. The two shallow crossers create natural rubs that stress man defenders and force linebackers to fight through traffic, while the dig sits down in the void behind them for a chunk gain versus zone coverage. The primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath to see if a defender gets picked or trails late, then works to the deep dig running from the trips side, and finally checks down to the backfield outlet if both are covered.
Pre-snap, check safety alignment and cornerback depth on the trips side since a single high safety often signals man coverage underneath, which favors the mesh crossers hitting early. Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they sit shallow expecting the crossers, the dig route will have a clean throwing lane behind them. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since a sim or user Mike linebacker can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This play struggles against a hard inside blitz with man coverage behind it, since the mesh crossers need time to develop and a fast interior rush collapses the pocket before the routes clear. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the shallow crossers can disrupt the mesh timing, so be ready to check down quickly if you see the corners sitting on the underneath routes at the snap.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm if you are getting man or zone before the snap, since this play punishes both but the read changes.
Against man coverage, trust the mesh to win early by watching for natural rub traffic that separates your crosser from a trailing defender, then hit him in stride.
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look immediately to the dig route sitting in the intermediate hole between the linebackers and the deep safety.
Pair this play with Mesh or Stick Y Slant from the same set to keep defenses guessing between the quick underneath game and the deeper dig shot, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops.
Best called on second or third and medium since it needs a beat to develop the mesh and the dig, and avoid it in obvious short yardage situations where a quicker route concept is safer.
