Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trips Y Iso is a run play that gives your offensive line a zone blocking scheme with double teams at the point of attack and a backside cutback lane. The line flows in unison toward the play call side while the HB reads the first level defender to decide between the bang, bend, or bounce path. With trips receivers to one side, this play can pull a linebacker or safety out of the box, and the primary read is the play side double team combo block into the near side linebacker, working to the backside cutback if the alley gets clogged.
Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap since a linebacker sitting shallow at 3 to 4 yards is showing run support and will fill the alley quickly Watch for a safety rotating down into the box pre-snap out of the trips side, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the run and creates a one on one vertical shot elsewhere in the playbook Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and end for penetration since a well timed gap shoot or nano blitz can blow up the zone track before the double team sets User controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat, so if you see a user linebacker or safety crashing the mesh point be ready to bounce the run outside instead of forcing it into the wall This run struggles against heavy fronts with 8 in the box or Bear fronts that stack extra defensive linemen, so audible away or use motion to check the box count before committing to the call
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box since the trips look often pulls a safety out to match numbers on the perimeter
Use the right stick to manually control the HB through the mesh point so you can identify the double team push in real time and adjust your aiming point instead of relying on the CPU logic
Hot route the trips receivers into quick stalk blocks or leave them on vertical releases to hold the corners and safety in coverage so they cannot crash down on the run fit
Pair this with HB Draw and RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the inside zone track and the perimeter bubble read, which slows down linebacker triggers
Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel with fewer extra defenders in the box
