Mesh Dig out of Shotgun Trips Y Iso is a man beating passing concept built around a classic mesh combination underneath with a dig route breaking over the top to attack the middle of the field. The trips side executes the traditional mesh crossing pattern designed to rub off man defenders, while the isolated Y receiver runs the dig at intermediate depth to sit in the void behind the mesh traffic. Your primary read starts with the dig against zone coverage since it settles into the throwing lane, but against man coverage you progress to the mesh crossers looking for a natural pick and separation, using the shallow crosser as your first option and the dig as the answer if linebackers widen out.
Identify pre snap whether the defense is showing man or zone based on corner alignment on the trips side, tight press alignment usually signals man coverage that the mesh crossers can exploit. Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender's depth at the snap since a shallow zone drop clogs the mesh while leaving the dig route open behind him. This concept struggles against disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep and linebackers staying patient in their zone drops, since the dig has nowhere to sit and the mesh gets clogged by underneath defenders. Beware of user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone since they can jump the mesh crossers if they read your eyes early, so look off the crossers before committing to the throw. Blitz heavy looks with man coverage behind them are vulnerable to this play since the mesh naturally creates traffic that disrupts man defenders trying to trail their assignments, giving your quarterback a fast completion before pressure arrives.
Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or match up zone that leaves the dig window open. Check the flow of the linebackers pre snap: if you see man alignment with no safety help over the trips side, hot route the outside receiver on a quick out to punish aggressive corners jumping the mesh. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, key the middle linebacker's depth since a shallow drop signals the dig will be open behind him for an easy completion. Pair this call with Mesh and H Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between different crossing depths, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops. If the defense starts jumping the mesh routes after multiple reps, sequence into HB Draw or RPO Alert Bubble to keep the run game and quick game honest and prevent defenders from selling out on the pass.
