Four Verticals out of Shotgun Trips Y Iso sends four receivers vertically up the field, with the trips side stacking two seams and an outside stretch while the backside iso receiver runs a solo vertical to hold the safety. The HB stays in to check release or leak out for a safety valve, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to climb into if the initial reads are covered. This is a premier man beater against Cover 1 and Cover 0 because it isolates cornerbacks with no help over the top, but it also stresses Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells by overloading the deep zones with more verticals than defenders can cap. The primary read progression starts with the backside iso vertical against single coverage, then works to the seam route on the trips side before checking down to the flat or the HB out of the backfield.
Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, single high tells you the seam routes have a soft spot in the middle of the field while two high tells you to attack the numbers on the trips side. Watch cornerback depth at the line, tight press alignment signals man coverage and confirms this is a green light play, while off coverage at seven or more yards suggests zone and a possible Cover 3 shell. Post snap, track the middle linebacker or any user controlled defender dropping into the deep middle hole, a fast drop into that zone signals Tampa 2 or a robbed Cover 3 and shuts down the inside seam. Look for slot cornerbacks and linebackers sinking under the seam routes, this is the classic Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 match tendency that forces you to work the sideline verticals instead of the inside lanes. Respect disguised blitz packages that show two high presnap then rotate to man free or Cover 0, if the safety crashes down after the snap you need to get the ball out on the backside iso route immediately before the pocket collapses.
Check the safety count before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate your eyes to the seam routes since the numbers advantage favors the trips side against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Against Cover 1 or Cover 0, immediately key the backside iso corner and throw off his hip if he does not get a clean jam, this is the fastest way to punish man coverage without progressing through the full read.
Hot route the shallow crosser or flat route to a drag if you expect a zone blitz, this gives you a built in answer against five and six man pressure without needing to check the play at the line.
Use Four Verticals on early downs to bait aggressive user defenders into jumping routes, then sequence into Mesh or Stick Y Slant from the same set to attack the space they vacated underneath.
Save this play for one score or two score situations and third and long, since the deep shots take time to develop and the offensive line needs a full five step drop to hold up against pressure.
