Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, since a wide 9 technique or crashing end signals the QB should pull and get outside quickly. Key the alignment of the strong side linebacker relative to the extra tackle, because a heavy walk up shows blitz or an aggressive run fit that the cutback lane can exploit. If the defense shows a two high shell with safeties rotating late, expect a soft edge and favor the keep read since the flat defender is likely occupied by run fits inside. Look for scrape exchange from the linebacker level post-snap, where the end sits and the backer loops outside, which should push the read back to the give on the HB. Against odd fronts or 3-4 looks with a heavy strong side, the extra gap created by the tackle over often gets outleveraged by an extra defender, so avoid this call when the defense stacks the box to seven or more.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only call this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the extra tackle removes a blocker from the perimeter passing game.
Use the Tackle Over formation shift itself as a pre-snap disguise, since defenses often shade run fits toward the tackle overload and open up cutback lanes away from the call.
Hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or hitch if the defense shows two high safeties, giving you an RPO style bail out without changing personnel.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Punch from the same set so the read option keep threat keeps defensive ends honest and slows down scrape exchange technique from linebackers.
Save this for early down calls, first and second and short to medium, where defenses are more willing to sell out on inside run fits and leave the edge soft.
