Inside Zone out of Shotgun Tackle Over is a pure zone run play with an unbalanced offensive line, showing the extra tackle bumped to the strong side for an extra double team block at the point of attack. The HB takes the handoff and reads the zone blocking scheme, pressing the line of scrimmage before selecting a lane based on how the defensive front flows. This is a run play designed to beat base fronts and aggressive gap shooters, with the primary read progression going frontside cutback lane first, then bounce to the backside cutback if the frontside is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacking the box with a linebacker creeping down or a safety cheating into the alley since that signals a run blitz. Watch cornerback depth and alignment, if they are playing off with soft outside leverage the strong side cutback lane opens up more easily. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and any user-controlled defensive lineman shooting a gap, since a disciplined interior line will erase cutback lanes and force the HB to bounce outside into pursuit. Look for linebackers reading run fits quickly with downhill flow, which shuts this play down if they fill gaps before the HB reaches the line. This play struggles against heavy fronts with eight in the box and gap-scraping linebackers who diagnose zone blocking on the snap.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box. Use the extra tackle from Tackle Over to your advantage against 4-3 and 3-4 fronts since the unbalanced line creates a numbers mismatch on the strong side. Manually control your HB through the mesh point and trust your zone blocking, letting the play develop instead of forcing it outside immediately. Pair this with 0 1 Trap and Read Option from the same set to keep defenders honest on the interior since all three plays start with similar HB alignment and mesh action. Use Inside Zone on early downs, first and second and short to medium, to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots later in the series.
