RPO Alert X Z Smoke out of Shotgun Tackle Over gives the quarterback a run/pass alert tied to the read defender on the play side. The diagram shows the HB running an inside zone track behind a down block from the tackle-over personnel, while the X receiver runs a quick smoke route to the boundary and the Z on the trips side releases outside for a bubble-style flat throw with the slot blocking down. The QB's primary read is the alert defender: give the ball on the zone run if that defender crashes or widens out of position, or pull and fire the smoke/bubble combo if he stays home to stop the run.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alert defender's first step after the snap: if he attacks downhill into the box, the smoke or bubble throw is already open. Check safety depth pre-snap: a single high safety often signals man coverage on the outside, which favors the smoke route's quick separation. Zone coverage with linebackers sitting in short flat zones can undercut the smoke throw, so be ready to trust the run if that defender stays disciplined. Blitz-heavy fronts with the slot corner crashing hard leave the bubble wide open, but a well-timed nano blitz off the edge can disrupt the QB's mesh read before he decides. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the RPO read man, since a smart user will bait the quarterback by faking a crash then sitting back into the throwing lane.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify the alert defender (usually the play side flat or slot defender) and decide your run/pass decision before the snap based on his depth and leverage.
If the defense shows a two-high shell with soft corners, favor the X smoke route since the quick throw beats off-man and soft zone coverage before the corner can close.
Against stacked boxes or run blitzes, trust the zone hand-off since the alert defender is forced to respect the pass and creates natural running lanes.
Use hot routes to convert the Z smoke into a hitch or speed out if you see a hard-charging slot corner trying to jump the bubble route.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies, forcing them to respect both the run and the quick RPO throw every snap.
