HB Punch out of Shotgun Tackle Over is a power run play that uses the extra offensive lineman aligned to the strong side to create a numbers advantage in the box. The line down blocks toward the strength while a puller wraps around to lead through the hole for the running back, who takes a slight lateral path before hitting downhill off the double team at the point of attack. This is not a route concept, it is a gap scheme run designed to overload one side with the tackle over tag, so the primary read is the running back keying his puller and pressing the play side double team before deciding to bounce or stick based on the first unblocked defender.
Identify where the extra offensive lineman is aligned pre-snap and count defenders in the box on that side, since a light box there is the green light for this play. Watch linebacker depth and shoulder alignment because linebackers flowing hard toward the strength before the snap can beat the puller to the hole and blow up the design. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the puller or scraping over the top, since a good user linebacker can fill the exact gap this play is designed to hit. This run struggles against gap exchange fronts and defenses that slant into the strength, so if you see a heavy front shifted to the tackle over side or a 3-4 look with edge defenders crashing down, expect this play to get stuffed. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an extra run fitter in the box is the hardest shell to run against here, while light boxes out of nickel or dime shells with defenders spread wide in coverage give the back a clean lane.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for the number of defenders in the box on the tackle over strength side before snapping the ball. Run this play when you see light boxes or a defense that has shifted its front away from the extra lineman, since the play design already gives you a numbers edge there. Use it on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your zone run game. Pair HB Punch with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set so the defense cannot key on the puller or the extra tackle without opening up cutback lanes elsewhere. If the defense starts loading the box to stop the power run after a few reps, sequence into RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Alert X Z Smoke from the same formation to force conflict defenders to stay honest on the perimeter.
